In this week’s installment of #MaternalMondays, Courtney Snowden, D.C.’s Deputy Mayor of Greater Economic Opportunity visited MedStar Washington Hospital to discuss pregnancy issues for women 35 and older. Meeting with Dr. Melissa Fries, a reproductive geneticist and high-risk obstetrician, and two District mothers, the group spoke about medical considerations and personal experiences of giving birth in the latter half of women’s reproductive years.

Dr. Fries explained that advanced maternity is “not destined for problems,” though it presents unique challenges. The group navigated fertility issues including intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and finding sufficient insurance coverage for fertility medications and procedures.
